Hand Planed Food Spreader

$40.00

More Beautiful with Age & Use

Periodically Mokuchi takes a break from furniture and architectural work to make a limited edition of food spreaders based on a simple, graceful form. Each spreader is shaped by hand using local hardwoods (sometimes called backyard exotics) fallen from backyard fruit trees rarely found commercially.

A fantastic gift for anyone that appreciates fine woodworking and minimalist design. Each piece will grow more beautiful with use. The natural oils from food and hand contact will bring out the patina of each spreader’s unique wood grain.

Craftmenship

Razor-sharp Japanese planes are used to uniformly slice the wood to create a lasting, glass-smooth finish. No oil, varnish or even sandpaper is used as they would alter and abrade the natural surface. This traditional approach created a timeless gift of craftsmanship and minimalist elegance.

Dimensions

Spreaders are 8 1/4 to 8 1/2 inch in length.

Current Collection Species & Provenance

  • Wild cherry harvest from residence in Floyd, VA. Edition of 50 spreaders

  • Bradford Pear limbs downed in Salem, VA wind storm. Edition of 35 spreaders.

Packaging

Mokuchi has packaged each spreader with care and attention to detail. Each spreader is nestled in a bed of curled, ribbon-thin wood shavings in a gift box. The wood shavings are made from the same wood used to make the spreader; the result of pulling the razor-sharp Japanese plane blade down the wood to yield the glass-smooth surface. A hand-printed letterpress card on Japanese Kozo paper describes how the gift was made and identifies the number of the spreader in the limited edition.
