Karl Bareis on Japanese Architecture

Karl Bareis of Santa Cruz Timberframes presented on Japanese Architecture by during the KEZ USA 2018  in Peekskill, NY. This lecture shares knowledge gathered over 40 years timber framing and during numerous trips to Japan, including leading 16 tours specifically focused on sharing Japanese approaches to architectural design. He explores how while Japanese architecture is seen as ancient, it is also a living craft that always evolving. How since the 5th century Japanese craftsmen continuously optimized elements in response to what succeeded and failed during earthquakes. Likewise standardizing measurements so woodworkers throughout the country could contribute components for temple construction on a grand scale.
