Japanese Timber Frame Workshop (5 Day) – Pre- Kezurou Kai USA 2018


In this 5 days Posts and beams workshop you will learn about, large scale joinery layout and cutting, proportioning, center line layout and cutting sequence. Grain orientation as well as gable roof layout will also be covered. Lots of hands on cutting time! We will be crafting a 6′ x 12′ structure using mostly cedar, yellow and red. Mortices and tenons of various kind as well housed sliding dovetails, kanawa and shachi will be the joinery employed.

Workshop will assemble the structure to be showcased as part of NYC KEZ 2018.

Sharpening or some sharpening experience


One joinery class, preferably Mortice and Tenon or similar experience



  • Japanese sharpening combination water stone 1000/6000 grit
  •  1/2”(12mm) and 1″ (24mm) bench chisel (Japanese preferred )
  • Japanese saw 210mm and 270mm ryoba style
  • Medium hammer 450-570gr
  • 2-3 sheets 220 wet dry sand paper
  • Pencil, square, old towel or large rag.


  • Japanese sharpening water stone 1000-1200 grit
  • Japanese sharpening water stone 3000-4000 grit
  • Japanese sharpening water stone 6000-10 000 grit
  • 1/4″, 1/2″ ,1” and one larger 1 1/2″-2″ Japanese bench chisels or larger, any other size is great too.
  • 3/8” or 1/2” as well as 1″ or larger Japanese push chisel
  • Japanese smoothing or block plane 48mm
  • Japanese scraper plane (tachiganna) 42mm or 48mm
  • Japanese saw 210mm, 240mm and 270mm ryoba style
  • Japanese saw 210mm or 240mm crosscut dozuki (backsaw)
  • Japanese saw 300mm kataba  (single side) tatebiki (rip)
  • Medium Japanese hammer 570-670g
  • Small Japanese hammer 225g
  • 2-3 sheets 220 wet dry sand paper
  • Beveled straight edge
  • Japanese square (sashigane)
  • Standard square
  • Pencil and old towel or large rag
