Japanese Plane: Shaping Wood

You sharpened and set up a Kanna (Japanese plane)! You made a pile of beautiful shavings! You resharpened a few times, made more shavings and now your plane needs some adjustment. Or, you want to expand your skills. This half day class focuses on the use and tweaking of the Kanna.

You will learn how to create a flat surface, how to square an edge, how to position your body and move while planing. You will also get plenty of time to practice and ask questions.

A minimum of one Japanese plane, set up and sharp.
If you have more, please bring as many Japanese planes as you would like.

If you do not have a plane in working condition you can rent one from Mokuchi for the afternoon. Just give us a heads up a week before class.

    Saw Horse Workshop

    Saw horses are an essential part of a flexible woodworking practice.

    In this two day class we will layout (mark out) all the joinery for a pair of saw horses suited to support a bench. Final height and dimensions will be customized to the individual for maximum comfort and efficiency while working. Joinery will be a variety of advanced mortices and tenons, including wedged and pegged. The focus will then be on cutting and assembly of one saw horse.  Leaving the second one to be finished at home if needed.

    An additional $95 materials fee will be required for each student at time of class.

    Sharpening with Japanese Waterstone

    Waterstones enable you to get the sharpest edge in an efficient and clean manner. No messy oil or grinding down your tools! In this one evening session, students will learn to sharpen woodworking chisels and plane blades, as well as pocket knifes and kitchen knifes using Japanese water stones. Tool sharpening with waterstones is a fundamental part of Japanese woodworking. It is also a very useful skill if you’re maintaining any tools that benefit from the sharpest of edges. Chefs interested in the skill for knives are very welcome in this class!

    Care and maintenance of sharpening stones will also be covered. Discussion will also address the differences between grits, the optimal grit sequence to get the sharpness needed for your task, and how to maintain a flat sharpening surface on your waterstone. A sharp tool is a safe tool.

    This class or equivalent experience is a prerequisite for all other classes, except for Japanese Woodworking Introduction

    This corner stone joint of western woodwork has also been used in the Japanese tradition for a long time. Class we will cover: sizing, proportioning, choice of angle, layout and cutting as well as where to use dovetails. You will see examples of full, half blind and blind dovetails. There will be a full cutting and assembly demonstration as well as ample time set aside for you to integrate all this knowledge by cutting your own dovetails!
