    Locust Bench

    Temperamental Beauty

Locust is known for its durability and grain character. It is also notorious for wood tension – creating twists and cracks as the lumber dries. Always on the lookout for beautiful, unusual pieces of wood, it took several years for Mokuchi to collect the pieces of stable, aged locust needed to bring this bench to life. The top is from one tree, the legs from another and the stretcher from yet a third. The wood grain is exquisite and worth the wait. The pleasing, slight upward sweep and all around shape of the top was the departure point in creating this bench. The legs are tilted ever slightly inward, requiring precision hand joinery to scribe the pieces for a perfect fit.

    Walrus Bench

    Wildly Elegant

One end of the bench shows the stylized face of a walrus bull. Tenons as the eyes, select edge saw marks as whiskers and tapered, curved legs as regal tusks. With a natural hewn live edge surface reminiscent of the battle scared skin on male walruses.

Handcrafted joinery construction with no glue or metal fasteners of any kinds. A one of a kind masterpiece.

    Hand Planed Food Spreader

More Beautiful with Age & Use

Each year Mokuchi takes a break from furniture and architectural work to make a limited edition of food spreaders based on a simple, graceful form. Each spreader is shaped by hand using local hardwoods (sometimes called backyard exotics), often fallen from fruit trees rarely found commercially.

A fantastic gift for anyone that appreciates fine woodworking and minimalist design. Each piece will grow more beautiful with use. The natural oils from food and hand contact will bring out the patina of each spreader’s unique wood grain.
